Hydraulic seals are a vital component in various industrial and domestic applications. They are inexpensive to replace but the subsequent downtime from a failed seal can be very costly for a manufacturer. One of the main causes of hydraulic seal failure is improper installation. It doesn’t help that there are many different installation procedures, all dependent on the nature of the application. There are, however, some fundamental practices that should be followed, regardless of the type of application. Here, we outline some important tips for successfully installing your hydraulic seals.
Clean the Seal
Before installation, make sure that everything is clean and completely free from dust or other contaminants. This extends to the working environment as well as the installation tools. Use lint-free cloths to thoroughly wipe down the seals, surfaces, and tools. Remember, even the smallest contamination can affect the performance of the seal and possibly lead to failure.
Protect the Seal
Before installation, check all the parts for burrs or sharp edges. If you find any, keep your seal away from these surfaces as they could cause nicks or cuts and damage the seal completely.
Lubricate the Seal
One of the most important points to address before installation is proper lubrication of the seal and its sealing path, using a clean, high-quality lubricant that is compatible with the raw materials used to produce the seal. Bearing Centre stocks an extensive range of quality lubricants for these kinds of applications.
Heat the Seal
Soaking the seal in any hot lubricant (more than 70ºC) will cause the seal material to soften and become more elastic, making it easier to install. It is very important, however, that you do not overheat the seal or try to heat the seal when it is already stretched, both of which will cause irreparable damage.
The points above will guide you through the basic process of assembly but it is still important that you carefully follow the manual for your specific application and that you use the correct tools for the job. When in doubt, don’t hesitate to contact a professional for assistance. At Bearing Centre, we always have an experienced team on call to lend a hand.
